What kind of research is required?

• The current Unmaintained Free Software policy says that a project needs to be announced as unmaintained by the author in order to be listed as unmaintained.
• The project needs to be published under a free license in order to be adopted by another party. It's no use putting up closed-source projects, nobody will be able to adopt them anyways.

Why is research required?

We do not want to annoy developers. There can be several reasons why a software looks dead but is still maintained:

• Source (mailing list, website, ...) is outdated.
• Project is stable / currently no need for new releases.
• Maintainer wants to take a small break from development.
